Consultation of Sagarmatha Sambaad, Janakpur

As a preparation for holding of 'Sagarmatha Sambaad', the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in collaboration with the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) and the Policy Research Institute (PRI) has organized a Regional Consultation Seminar in Janakpur on January 14, 2020.


The first edition of the 'Sagarmatha Sambaad' will be held on 2-4 April, 2020 on the theme of 'Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity'. The Janakpur Consultation Seminar was held in Janakpurdham among the regional and local level stakeholders to incorporate their concerns and views as a compelling story for the global interest in regard with the Terai plain, as the Chure (Siwalik) range is getting deforested and desertified in the alarming way.


The Chief Minister of the Province No. 2 Hon'ble Mr. Lalbabu Raut was the special guest of the program. The provincial ministers, members of the provincial assembly, professors, intellectuals, local environment activists and journalists had also participated the program.  


The principal speakers of the seminar were Er. Ramdeep Sah, mountaineering expert Aang Chhiring Sherpa, climate expert Dr. Archana Shrestha, environmentalist Dr. Bijayakumar Singh, the Chure conservation expert Mr. Nagdev Yadav, water resource expert Er. Ratneshwarlal Karna, expert of hydrology Dr. Krishnachandra Prasad Sah and representative from the Ministry of Forest and Environment Mr. Ramprasad Avasthi.  Additionally, many commentators, scholar and journalists contributed their expertise on the concerned issues.


Apart from the local causes, the global climate change has also affected the entire region of southern slopes of the Himalayan foothills. Participants from the grassroots level demonstrated and shared their experiences as to how climate change has been impacting their lives and mountain ecology.
