Sarwesh Phuyal is a Computer Engineering graduate from VIT Vellore, India, with a strong interest in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing. He's especially curious about how technology can help solve real-world problems, particularly at the intersection of computing and foreign policy. As a Research Intern at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute of Foreign Affairs, under the MoFA Summer Internship and Fellowship Programme 2026, Sarwesh is working on a project that uses AI to study how countries talk about foreign relations differently to domestic versus international audiences. He pulls multilingual news data from GDELT and digs through thousands of articles, looking for patterns in how the same story gets framed differently depending on the audience. He's also worked on a few other AI projects along the way, including one that reads handwritten Devanagari text with over 96% accuracy, and another that spots plant diseases from photos. Along with that, he's picked up practical experience in data analytics, web development, and IT support through past internships and freelance work.
Going forward, Sarwesh wants to keep learning about foreign policy and diplomacy, and see how far technology can go in making governance and international cooperation work a little better.
