The activities of the Institute of Foreign Affairs are guided by the functions, duties and powers prescribed in the Institute of Foreign Affairs (Formation) Order, 2011.

IFA carries out study, research, training, documentation, publication and dialogue-related activities in the field of foreign affairs, diplomacy and international relations. It also provides advice and recommendations to the Government of Nepal on matters related to foreign policy, diplomatic practice and consular affairs.

Policy Study and Research

IFA conducts study and research on Nepal’s foreign relations, international affairs and issues of national interest. Based on such study and research, the Institute may prepare concept papers, policy inputs and recommendations for the Government of Nepal.

The Institute may also study specific or emerging issues in foreign affairs and provide suggestions for timely improvement in Nepal’s diplomatic and consular practices.

Training and Orientation

IFA provides training to officials of the Government of Nepal on foreign affairs and diplomatic practices. This includes orientation and briefing programs for officials working in foreign affairs, diplomacy and related areas.

The Institute also supports the development of training materials and course content as required.

Conferences, Seminars and Discussions

IFA organizes conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops, meetings and discussions on foreign affairs, diplomacy and international relations. These programs may focus on specific policy issues or broader themes of national, regional and international importance.

Publications and Documentation

IFA prepares and publishes reports, journals, bulletins, research papers and other relevant materials. The Institute also maintains and updates records and information related to Nepal’s foreign affairs and diplomatic relations.

Through this work, IFA aims to develop itself as a resource center on Nepal’s foreign policy, diplomacy and international relations.

Coordination and Institutional Linkages

IFA may liaise and coordinate with foreign governments, national and international organizations, academic institutions, experts and individuals to achieve its objectives.

The Institute also works to build institutional linkages with relevant professional organizations in Nepal and abroad.

For specific programs, studies and projects, IFA may draw support from experts with knowledge and experience in foreign affairs, international relations, diplomacy, law, security, academia, government service and related fields.

IFA is also working to launch a Roster of Resource Persons to help identify and engage qualified experts, scholars, practitioners and professionals for research, training, dialogue and policy-related activities.
